First-Generation and Limited-Income (FGLI) Services

Welcome, first-generation and limited-income Badgers!

First-Generation and Limited-Income (FGLI) Services is a central hub for connection, support, and success for students who are the first in their families to attend college or come from limited-income backgrounds. The office provides a welcoming space where students can build community, explore campus opportunities, and access resources designed specifically for first-generation and limited-income Badgers.

In addition to coordinating FGLI-focused efforts across campus, the unit creates meaningful opportunities for students to engage and thrive. Through programs, events, and collaborative initiatives, the unit fosters belonging and empowers both current and future first-generation and limited-income students to succeed academically, personally, and professionally.

UW–Madison was selected to the FirstGen Forward Network (NASPA) in August 2024.

Who is “first-generation”?

FirstGen Forward defines first-generation students as those whose “parent(s) did not complete a 4-year college or university degree.”

We are thrilled to be starting this initiative in support of our first-gen students. As a first-generation student myself, I recall how difficult it was at times to be learning the ins and outs of college academics and campus life without guidance or experience from my family. I’m excited to work with our campus colleagues to strengthen our offerings and community-building opportunities for first-gen and limited-income students at UW.
