History
UW–Madison has a long history of academic and scholarship programs dedicated to supporting first-generation and limited-income students. Building on this foundation, the First-Generation Badgers initiative launched in September 2023 to better coordinate efforts across campus and to create programming that fosters community among first-generation and limited-income students.
In summer 2025, Chancellor Mnookin announced a new initiative to further strengthen support for these students. By spring 2026, this commitment resulted in the establishment of First-Generation and Limited-Income (FGLI) Services, a dedicated unit within Student Affairs.
FGLI services now serves as a central home for programs, resources, and community-building efforts that empower first-generation and limited-income Badgers. This new department reflects the university’s continued dedication to expanding opportunities and strengthening belonging for students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree.
