History
Building on a long-standing network of academic and scholarship programs that have supported first-generation students on campus, Student Affairs launched the First-Generation Badgers initiative in September 2023. The initiative coordinates efforts across campus offices and creates programming that fosters connection among first-generation and limited-income students.
In summer 2025, Chancellor Mnookin announced a new initiative that charged units within the Student Success and Belonging theme area to adopt a shared focus on supporting first-generation and limited-income students, building on the foundation of the First-Generation Badgers program.
By spring 2026, this commitment led to the creation of First-Generation and Limited-Income Services, a dedicated unit within Student Affairs focused on supporting all first-gen and limited-income Badgers. This new department reflects the ongoing dedication to building community and expanding resources for those who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree.
